Why is a special instructional program for the gifted needed?

Students possessing high academic ability or potential for academic success need special learning experiences and opportunities designed to address their unique needs, interests and abilities. To address the exceptional abilities of these students, the instructional program must be differentiated in terms of level of abstraction, complexity, pacing, breadth, and depth.

Anderson School District Five recognized the need to serve academically gifted children in 1975 by implementing a special program for students in grades 3-6. The South Carolina Education Improvement Act of 1984 mandated a comprehensive academic program for eligible students in grades 3-12.

The Challenge Center located on the campus go the former North Anderson Elementary School offers a one day a week pull-out program for students in grades three through five. Eligible students from each of the district's elementary schools attend this program each week. District Five buses provide transportation to and from the center.

A site-based, self-contained program is provided for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. This program is designed to meet the needs of the student population at each of the three middle schools. Classes meet daily.

Challenge Students at the high school level are served through honors and Advanced Placement courses.
